Philip H. Santa-Emma, MD, FAAHPM
Philip H. Santa-Emma, MD, FAAHPM, FAAFP, HCMD is the medical director for the Mount Carmel Hospice and Palliative Care Program. He has been with them since the inception of the program in 1997. He received his undergraduate degree, BA with Honors in Chemistry, from The Ohio State University and received his MD degree also from OSU in 1988. He completed a three-year residency in family medicine at Mount Carmel Health and was in private practice from 1991-1997. He is a former Roxanne Scholar in Palliative Medicine. Under his leadership, Mount Carmel was one of the first CAPC Centers of Excellence, responsible for educating hundreds of hospital systems on development of palliative care programs. He is the past chair of the hospital Ethics Committee. He has spoken nationally on the subject of palliative care, symptom management, medical ethics, and end of life care. He is past president of the medical staff at Mount Carmel. He is currently a member of the Ethics Committee at Mount Carmel, the Primary Care Council of Mount Carmel Medical Group, and the Clinical Operations Clinical Excellence Council at Trinity Health.
