COVID-19 Vaccine Safety and the Public Trust: Lessons from Polio
A new opinion piece, published in Stat by Drs. Diane E. Meier, R. Sean Morrison, and Chris Barker, acknowledges the urgency in development of the coronavirus vaccines, but stresses the importance of ensuring vaccine safety — making a connection to the rushed release of the polio vaccines.
"We need to ensure that the procedures that had been skipped in 1955, leading to 40,000 children developing polio, do not happen with Covid-19 vaccines."
The authors provide solutions to preventing this, such as having the original data from the ongoing COVID-19 vaccine trials verified by independent experts, and the FDA having oversight and testing of the manufacturing processes.
