Best Practices in Dementia Care and Caregiver Support

The new Best Practices in Dementia Care and Caregiver Support unit provides clinicians from all specialties and disciplines with training on how to effectively communicate with patients and their loved ones about a dementia diagnosis, help families understand what to expect and how to prepare for the future, interpret and address behavioral symptoms, manage common medical issues, navigate difficult care decisions, and support the caregivers of people living with dementia.

Virtual Workshop: Managing Pain at the Intersection of Serious Illness, Chronic Pain, and Substance Use Disorder

Chronic pain management for patients living with a serious illness is complicated. What are the lowest-risk, highest-benefit strategies to improve patient quality of life? How can clinicians understand and comply with opioid regulations? What does the science tell us about safety and prescribing best practices for chronic pain with concurrent serious illness? What tools do clinicians have to confidently manage pain for patients with opioid use disorder or another substance use disorder?

This interactive virtual workshop teaches strategies for chronic pain management when treating patients living with a serious illness, with or without substance use disorder—including how to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder.

Kidney Supportive Care: Expanding Choice with Concurrent Hospice and Dialysis Care

In this on-demand Interprofessional Grand Rounds session, nephrology and palliative care clinicians Emily Lu, MD, Jane Schell, MD, MHS, and social worker Lisa Maurer, LCSW, ACSW, explore the emerging role of concurrent hospice and dialysis care (“concurrent care”) and its impact on person-centered care. By the end of the session, participants will understand the role of kidney supportive care in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), the benefits of concurrent care, and approaches for operationalizing concurrent care in daily practice.
