Lessons Learned from Harnessing Compassion with Contemplative Medicine
In a brief report published in Palliative Medicine Reports, the authors reported results from educational sessions where they hosted pilot educational sessions on contemplative medicine practices for hospice and palliative medicine fellows to help address unspoken suffering in clinicians. This approach, which uses Buddhist concepts of compassion, mindfulness, and insight to address the suffering, was well-received by the fellows. The authors suggest that incorporating these practices into fellowship training may provide opportunities for emotional development and teach self-awareness of how difficult emotions can affect patient communication.
