A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) found that lifetime trauma is prevalent among older adults living with serious illness, with one-third of adults in the national sample reporting three or more traumatic events. The authors found that cumulative trauma is significantly linked to physical symptoms like pain, fatigue, and dyspnea, as well as depression and loneliness. These findings suggest that adopting a trauma-informed approach could improve the quality of life for patients by addressing both physical and psychosocial needs​.
