Additional legislation still needed for more permanent solutions for telehealth billing.

After political upheaval and a deadline looming, a slimmed-down Continuing Resolution was signed, extending the ability to bill Medicare for services delivered via telehealth regardless of patient location for an additional few weeks, to March 14, 2025. Additional legislation from the new Congress will be needed for Medicare telehealth billing waivers to continue beyond that date. Before the last-minute changes, a bipartisan agreement would have extended the Medicare telehealth billing by two additional years. The slimmed-down law also had no provisions to address Medicare physician payment, meaning the 2.83% cut in the conversion factor will go into effect on January 1, 2025, and continue for the calendar year unless legislative action is taken. Additionally, this law delays any cuts to the Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) payment to April 1, 2025.
