Study finds that the number of family caregivers for older adults has increased significantly, with notable changes in demographics and caregiving responsibilities.

A study published in Health Affairs found that the number of family caregivers assisting older adults in the U.S. increased from 18.2 million in 2011 to 24.1 million in 2022—nearly six million. Despite this growth, the average number of caregivers per older adult remained stable at about two. Notably, caregivers in 2022 were more likely to assist older adults who were younger, male, and better educated individuals, who were less likely to have dementia. However, those caring for loved ones with dementia experienced increased co-residence, higher care hours, and reduced employment.
