Retrospective analysis reveals supportive oncology programs associated with improved care quality and efficiency for advanced cancer patients.

A study published in Cancer analyzed the health care utilization and costs of patients enrolled in supportive ontology (SO) versus three comparison cohorts who did not receive SO. Results showed the treatment group had between 27% and 70% fewer inpatient admissions and between 16% and 54% fewer emergency department visits compared to non‐SO cohorts. Total medical costs were between 4.4% and 24.5% lower for the treatment group across all comparisons. The findings suggest that SO programs can improve the quality and efficiency of care for patients with advanced cancer.
