Function/Duties of Position

The Section of Palliative Care at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) is seeking a palliative medicine physician to join the outpatient palliative care teams across the Supportive and Palliative Care Clinics at the Knight Cancer Institute and community partners. The physician role may include inpatient consultation at OHSU Hospital as part of the clinical scope. We are looking for an energetic physician who has completed fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine and wants to develop a career in palliative care and early integration of palliative care services for patients with serious illness. The appointee in this position is responsible for the provision of Palliative Care Consultation and longitudinal care coordination in the Supportive and Palliative Care Outpatient Clinic.

The physician will teach trainees and support staff in their area of professional expertise. Teaching is done through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year and through teaching in the course of performing their own job by modeling best practices, mentoring trainees, guiding learning through delegating graduated and focused levels of responsibility. Assistant Professors have a demonstrated competence in teaching and are knowledgeable about relevant guidelines from all applicable regulating bodies. (E.g. ACGME competencies for clinical faculty).

The physician will provide an outstanding level of professional performance (e.g. quality of clinical care for clinical faculty). Professional performance is to be delivered in a manner that is compliant with the regulations and guidelines of all relevant regulating bodies (e.g. JCAHO, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, OHSU IRB, NIH and all other state, federal, and institutional regulatory guidelines). Treats all patients, research subjects, trainees and co-workers with dignity and respect.

Overall, the appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the University's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. Appointee shall have a demonstrated competence in patient care and teaching/mentorship. Appointments will be at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor academic rank commensurate with qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide outpatient consultation and longitudinal care services in palliative care.
Provide inpatient consultation with the palliative medicine consult service.
Facilitate clarification of patient and family goals of care.
Facilitate access to appropriate supportive care services.
Education of staff and coworkers.
Provide full and appropriate documentation of patient care services to support professional billing for these services.
Participation in on-call coverage with the interdisciplinary team.
Assist in the development of standards of care.
Perform other duties as requested.
Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.

Required Qualifications
MD/DO with ACGME Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship training required.
Board certified or eligible in Hospice & Palliative Medicine.
1-2 years experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team preferred.
Current Oregon state medical license and in good standing with medical board.
Excellent skills in working with teams, communication with patients, families, and consulting services.
