Michelle Owens

Michelle Owens, DO, FAAFP, FAAHPM

Dr. Owens serves as the Director of Specialty Care, overseeing collaborative efforts with specialty clinical and operational teams to establish an innovative patient care approach and space tailored to community needs. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Arizona State University and an osteopathic medical degree from Kansas City University (KCU). She completed her Family Medicine residency at UT Austin Dell Medical School, and then further specialized in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) through a fellowship at UT Southwestern and Parkland Hospital in Dallas. She is dual board certified in Family Medicine and HPM. She has excelled in inpatient and outpatient palliative medicine program development as well as led an inpatient hospice unit serving the Austin community. Formerly an associate medical director at a virtual healthcare company, she contributed to innovative palliative-minded approaches for resource-limited, seriously ill patients.

Dr. Owens boasts an exceptional record, including publications, presentations, awards, and community contributions. She prioritizes policy, process development, and well-being initiatives. She was a former scholar of the American Academy of Family Practice (AAFP) Leading Physician Well-being Program and now serves as faculty in their Leadership track. She co-founded and co-chairs the American Academy of Hospice & Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) self-care community, as well as co-chairs the Travis County Medical Society Physician Wellness Program.  Additionally, she has been trained in facilitating Balint groups to tend to the clinician-patient relationship through exploration of challenging cases. Dr. Owens brings valuable expertise in teaching and supervising clinicians across diverse clinical settings, working with various patient populations. She has been involved in educating medical students, residents, and HPM fellows as an affiliate faculty member at the UT Austin Dell Medical School. 

Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Owens treasures family time with her spouse and two children. Her passions span live music, culinary experiences, and travel.
